Humanitarian Help COPENHAGEN INTERNATIONAL ROTARY CLUB
11.11.95 Our club is founded 1996 - 1997 We donated DKK: 40.000,- to the `Teddy Bear Fund´ a fund organised by air stewardesses to help children in Rumania who been herded into institutions because they were infected with AIDS. The infection had been caused by the Ceausescu regime’s policy of feeding orphans by blood infusions. The blood was never properly screened; consequently thousands of orphans were contaminated with HIV. Our donation enabled the `Teddy Bear Fund´ to be registered as an official Danish charity.
1998 - 2000
Our club made the considerable donation of DKK: 70.000,- to the Rotary project grounded in Jaipur, India and therefore known as the `Jaipur Foot´ By using basic materials such as PVC drainpipes and small electric ovens, field stations create proteases legs and fit them to an artificial, jointed foot. The cost of the artificial limb is so low that it can be renewed as a child grows. The main patients for the Jaipur Foot were the victims of landmines. 2001 - 2002 Working together with the Rotary Club of Cambridge, England we donated the amount of DK: 25.000,- towards equipment for the teaching hospital being created in Rumania with cooperation from Cambridge University 2002 – 2003 Rotary Clubs all over the world were asked to make an extra effort to sponsor Polio Plus and make one last push to exterminate the disease from the planet. Our club was able to present DKK: 43.000,- to the district collection, mainly due to one member who ran his own scheme of charging parties of people to view the renovated Christiansborg Church.
2003 - 2004.
When the Tsunami struck S.E. Asia on Dec. 26th. 2003, a member of our club, together with two of Rotary’s PDG s and The Secretary for Rotary Denmark, founded the `Danish Rotary Family Tsunami Relief Fund´. Our member attended over twenty meetings and together with others on the National Committee raised DKK: Four million which was presented to the Rotary Club of Sri Lanka to help rebuild 23 schools destroyed by the tsunami.
The CIRC´s first donation of DKK: 10.000,- was one of the very first received and was used to fund immediate relief so desperately needed to avoid further sickness and outbreaks of diseases.
Several members gave generously from their own pockets to the fund also.
We organised a Charity Lunch in the Marriott Hotel on January 18th. 2004 which raised DKK: 18.000,-
This money was sent directly to The Rotary Club of Colombo North who used it to buy tents, sarongs, cooking utensils etc. and then drove out to the North East Coast of Sri Lanka to deliver the relief aid in person. 2003 - 2004. Supporting our Rotary district project to clear landmines in Sri Lanka we started planning the first Fundraising Gala Dinner in the history of Rotary Denmark-
2004 - 2005
Supporting our Rotary district project to clear landmines in Sri Lanka we started planning the first Fundraising Gala Dinner in the history of Rotary Denmark
We held the gala dinner and made a profit of DKK: 143.000,- every kroner of which was handed directly to the project leader to pay the Rotary Quick Response Team of landmine clearers, organised by Danish De-mining Group in Sri Lanka. 2005 With the help of a club member who was working with a pharmaceutical company, a years supply of vitamins, enough for every child and every member of staff, was freighted from Denmark to the door of a remote Cloister in Poland where Nuns look after hopeless cases of demented and severely handicapped children rejected from society. The emergency occurred because the cloister now come under EU rules and was required to spend an enormous amount of money on renovation of the cloisters, should they wish to continue their work for the children. One of their biggest expenses that they could no longer afford was vitamins for these depraved children. Droge A/S sponsored the delivery and we paid a token of DKK: 8.000,- for a substantial delivery. 2006 - 2007 At Christmas we presented the Copenhagen branch of the Salvation Army with DKK: 10.000,- to provide a warm bed and a proper Christmas meal for the homeless in Copenhagen. When the confrontation between young people and the City Council of Copenhagen erupted into violence in March 2007 the library of the Christianshavns Gymnasium (High School) was vandalized and thousands of books burnt. As the high school is not part of the Copenhagen City Council insurance scheme, they faced payment of repairs and replacement of books for the first DK: 400.000,- themselves. This was the high school that had just given our popular exchange student, Pedro Maestrelli, a wonderfully enjoyable year. Because of this, and because we hate fascist behavior, our club organised a concert in April in the Christians Kirken to raise money for the library. We were able to hand over DKK: 30.000,- to the Rector of the Christianshavns Gymnasium toward the rebuilding of this library. (Read more on www.circ.dk) Tom Henderson the founder of the big Rotary project `Shelterbox´ visited our club in April to speak about the project and explain how it works. We presented Tom with DKK: 55.000,- This project has impressed so many members that we plan to continue our support. Read more on www.shelterbox.org
